  1. Those interested in being considered for candidacy must express interest by contacting:

    no  later than  July15, 2022

  2. An initial evaluation of the readiness of each candidate to move to active candidate status will be made by either Mike Covello or Mike Schiro no later than July 30, 2022.  Only active candidates will be considered beyond this point.

  3. Active candidates will be instructed to submit formal applications (see #2 below)

  4. Active candidates will be assigned to one or more of the trainers listed below.  Active candidates will work with trainers for on field work during various dates during the June 30 – October 15 time frame.  Dates and training activity will be coordinated by trainers and active candidates.

  5. When the trainer feels the candidate is ready for evaluation, he/she shall contact Mike Schiro or Mike Covello to arrange a time and place for the candidate to be evaluated. 

  6. NCAA Rules/mechanics examination  will take place in the late summer or early Fall  2022.  The examination may be done virtually.

  7. Decisions made in  October or early November 2022

  8. Successful candidates serve first year as probationary umpires for the  2023 season and  return for re-evaluation  the following fall

Application Procedure

  1. Go to the ECSU web page (www.ecsumpires.com) click on www.ecsumpires.com/umpire-information Complete the form on line and click submit.  Your application  must be completed no later than July 15, 2022.

  2. Send $100 application fee (check payable to ECSU) to Mike Schiro, 63 Monroe Place, Bloomfield, NJ. 07003. Payment should be made no later than 2 weeks after your application is submitted.   Unsuccessful candidates will have $50 returned to them.  
    For successful candidates, this fee will cover ECSU dues for the 2023 season.  

Qualifications

  1. Current member of an organized umpire group (e.g., ASA/USA, Federation (high school), USSSA, Pony)

  2. Minimum of 5 years experience working games sponsored by one or more of the above      

  3. At least 21 years of age

NCAA on-field and classroom training

  1.  All contact with candidates during the training period will be made by the trainer assigned 

  2. All candidates must arrange times and dates for training with their assigned trainer.

  3. Trainers shall submit progress reports to Mike Covello and Mike Schiro no later than 48 hours after each session with the active candidate assigned to them.

  4. NCAA rules and mechanics

    1. Classes held weekly during late summer or early fall. An assessment of  NCAA rules and mechanics follows the last class. A score of 80% or higher is required for a candidate to be considered further.    Dates and location to be announced.

Evaluation

  1. Evaluation of active candidates by Mike Schiro and Mike Covello  will  take place in early Fall 2022. 
    A positive evaluation is required for candidates to be appointed to the ECSU set of NCAA qualified umpires for the 2023 season.

New Umpire Staff

  1. Umpires added to the ESCU staff for the 2023 season will serve that season as=probationary umpires.  Game partners will assist with mentoring of probationary umpires for the 2023 season.  Probationary umpires are required to present  themselves for re-evaluation during the 2023 fall season.
